Sleeping away from home fails for predictable reasons: unfamiliar light, unfamiliar noise and an uncomfortable position. A small kit addresses all three.
Light
Hotel curtains rarely close completely and standby lights are everywhere. A mask is the smallest, lightest and most reliable solution.
Sound
Corridors, lifts and air conditioning are the usual offenders. A compact sound machine or a familiar sound on a phone masks them. Familiarity is the point — the same sound every night becomes a cue.
Position
On a plane or a train the head falling forward is what wakes you. Support that holds the head upright is worth more than padding.
Keep it packed
The kit only works if it is always in the bag. Keeping a duplicate set permanently packed is why some people sleep well away from home and others do not.
